UniChar Introduces Search by Drawing Powered by Machine Learning

[prMac.com] Ogden, Utah – Jordan Hipwell today released a powerful new feature in the UniChar iOS app. Introducing Search by Drawing, an incredible new search mode that allows users to quickly and easily find Unicode symbols simply by drawing. UniChar – Unicode Keyboard 5.4 is for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.

Powered by machine learning, Search by Drawing analyzes the drawing as the user draws to predict what symbol(s) are most accurately represented. The machine learning model, created and trained using Apple’s Turi Create, uses a convolutional neural network running image classification algorithms that enable it to recognize the drawing. Utilizing this model with Core ML and Vision in iOS 11, drawings are processed quickly and efficiently, performing up to 600 billion operations per second with the A11 Bionic Neural Engine on iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

Search by Drawing has been introduced in beta, bringing support for 152 pictograph symbols. Users from around the world can help to add support for all symbols by submitting their own drawings. Each drawing submitted will be used to train the machine learning model, teaching it to recognize all symbols while also improving accuracy. Future updates to the app will include these crowd-sourced improvements.

“This is an exciting point in time where machine learning can improve the apps we use every day,” said Jordan Hipwell, designer and developer of UniChar. “It’s thrilling to release Search by Drawing and to open it up to allow anyone to contribute and help train it. I am excited to see how it will be used and how it will evolve.”

Since UniChar was launched in June of 2014, updates have been steadily released that have made it easier to find and utilize Unicode symbols. UniChar Keyboard was introduced alongside iOS 8, adding the ability to type special characters in any app. Spotlight integration with Web Markup made characters accessible on the web and inside the native search experience. UniChar recently gained the ability to utilize the code points and HTML entities of the symbols, making UniChar an efficient utility for developers. With optimizations for Split View and support for Drag and Drop on iPad, it has never been easier to work with Unicode symbols.
