LearningSigns: Learn the alphabet before the language

[prMac.com] London, United Kingdom – LearningSigns just released version 1.1, an improved version of their mobile learning games for learning new alphabets, designed to help language learners to successfully master the hurdle of a new alphabet. Release 1.1. features new alphabets for Hebrew and Swedish, as well as info screen explaining the unique learning concept, a speed-play by optionally muting the supporting audio, and new localizations for Greek, Hebrew, Mandarin, Polish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Adults who wish to learn a second language with an alphabet other than that of their first language face the challenge to first have to get familiar with the alphabet. Language learning applications assume that the learner already knows the alphabet, even for languages with different alphabets or writing systems. LearningSigns realised this market opportunity through their innovative approach: They offer a quick, fun, and researched approach to learn alphabets away from the textbook routine. The mobile learning industry with its smart-phones and tablets provides the ideal market place for the alphabet learning target groups of students, business and leisure travellers.

LearningSigns games are designed to help travellers navigate their way to banks, restaurants and hotels, yet are easy for children to use to learn letters and numbers. Alphabets now available are Arabic, English, German, Hebrew, Russian, and Swedish. The engaging design of the game progresses the player from simpler to more challenging levels with complex letter combinations. Phonemes spoken by first language experts are an integral feature. Download of the first package is free.

LearningSigns is based on a unique 3-step learning concept, which leads the learner step by step to a confident familiarity with a new alphabet.

1) Shape of the words and their pronunciation
The learners match pairs of images and whole words to get a feeling for the new symbols and the pronunciation of the words.

2) Various forms of the letters and symbols
The learners match pairs of various forms of the letters and symbols. Now the learners have learned all the forms they need in order to read new words.

3) Position in the word
The position of the letters in the word is very important in every language. Learn which forms occur where.

The first learning game was successfully launched by start-up company LearningSigns in November 2012, featuring alphabets for Arabic, English, German, and for Russian. Meanwhile the company has been working hard to add two new alphabets (for Hebrew and Swedish) and has also added some substantial localisations. People in 79 countries across the globe play LearningSigns mobile games.

“Dr. Priya Abraham, Managing Director of LearningSigns, confirms that learning an alphabet reduces potential alienation when travelling to places that use alphabets other than the alphabet of the traveller’s first language. Obviously it is essential to learn the alphabet before the language. The result is an ideal self-blended learning package, for example in combination with other language learning programmes, which typically assume that users are already familiar with the alphabet of the target language. After having played through, for example, the Russian alphabet app the learners have taken a giant step towards travel through Russia at ease. They are then prepared to learn the language on the trip!”
