Indie game developers Brisk Mobile & YETi CGI have joined forces for the December 5th launch of Roaming Fortress: a genre-bending approach to tower defense that will look to ‘crush’ the competition this Christmas season with help from Adobe Air and a Burdenbeast. While the game itself is groundbreaking the story behind it is innovative as well.
Larger publishers like EA Mobile and Gameloft leverage high-profile licensing deals and partnerships, but start-up developers have to build a name for themselves from the ground up. A difficult feat given there are now over 1 million mobile apps vying for our attention. So when Brisk’s Director of Gaming, Tim Harrison, bumped into YETi CGI at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco in March of this year – he recognized immediately that Roaming Fortress had potential. “Here was this great group of guys, with a totally new take on tower defense, and no-one to help them navigate the space,” said Harrison. Brisk had developed a huge following with the success of Medieval “so Roaming Fortress really fit with our overall strategy.” It was a perfect match. After a few emails the two companies joined forces to create what they expect will be an app store hit.
Founded in 2008, Brisk Mobile knows tower defense strategies well. Their breakout castle defense game, Medieval even beat out Angry Birds to become the number one game in the app store for two full weeks in 2010. Many successful games and over 5 million downloads later, Brisk has now built the foundation and distribution footprint required to support other start-ups; a publisher/developer business model that Harrison feels is necessary in a market where standing out as a brand is becoming increasingly difficult.
Primarily a services-based game developer with a great track record, YETi CGI had yet to launch it’s own game and needed backup. “We are committed to creating great games and Brisk Mobile has been hugely supportive, our partnership with them gives us the ability to focus on what we do best: create and innovate,” said Cory Heald, Creative Lead and CEO of YETi CGI. Roaming Fortress features exceptional graphics, a unique combat system using over 50 squads and 75 levels of game play but it took a lot of ingenuity to get it right. Of particular interest to Harrison was their impressive use of the latest graphic technologies available.
Currently there are over 100 million mobile gamers in the US alone with players spending an average of 7.8 hours a month gaming. A market this powerful demands that developers constantly work to innovate and create exceptional gameplay. The UI/UX experience is central to the success of a game so YETi looked to Adobe Air 3.5 for help.
According to Heald, “Adobe Air is our go to developer platform as it allows us to maintain full creative control, while providing a rich user experience in a well developed programming environment. While lightweight on iOS and Android devices, on the front end it creates a high performance 3D experience. We also used the latest Wacom illustration tools allowing us to incorporate stunning and realistic visuals.”
Alchemy and A Mythical Beast:
The alchemy of a number one game is elusive; engagement is found through a spark that is created when content and player connect. In the case of Roaming Fortress, the Burdenbeast is a powerhouse fighting machine that engages players by bringing the fight to the enemy but it also makes for a great story:
Driven into the borderlands of their once great empire, the surviving Manatalopian Knights devised an ambitious plan to retake the lost kingdom and mete out justice on the Horde by moving their remaining fortress onto the back of the mythical Burdenbeast. So begins the campaigns of the Manatalopian Knights to reclaim the lost kingdom and drive the evil forces back from whence they came.
For Harrison it all comes back to creativity. “Roaming Fortress really is unique. In a typical tower defense the screen is totally stationary. Enemies come and go, you place some obstacles in their way. With Fortress, and the use of the Burdenbeast, you’re constantly moving over the battleground. With tons of upgrades and squads the gameplay is just so much more dynamic than anything we’ve seen in the market today.”
